Thanks to the generous support of the Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office, Newcastle-under-Lyme BID are set to transform an underutilised and graffiti-covered alleyway on Scarlett Street into a vibrant and thought-provoking mural. This project contributes to the Safer Streets initiative and aligns closely with the Get Home Safe campaign launched with Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council in 2022.
This project aims to not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the town but also promote a safer and more welcoming environment, specifically focusing on women’s safety. In collaboration with the Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council and wider stakeholders, the BID have supported proactive steps to have women’s safety in our town in mind. These steps include various initiatives including a women’s safety hub located in Lancaster Building, funding for First Aid responders on key date, provision of women’s safety items and supporting local nightlife businesses with enhanced training.
Through collaboration with the local authority and a local landlord, a successful funding application to the Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioners Office has allowed us to partner with talented local artist Rob Fenton, who played a significant role in developing the branding for the original Get Home Safe campaign in 2022.
BID Manager Charlotte Pearce stated, “We are thrilled to see the Police Commissioner’s Office recognising the importance of this endeavour and providing the funding we need to bring it to life. The transformation of this once-neglected alleyway will not only brighten our town but also serve as a catalyst for essential conversations about women’s safety.”
Artist Rob Fenton, the creative mind behind the mural, added, ‘Art has the power to not only beautify our surroundings but also ignite meaningful conversations. In collaboration with Newcastle under Lyme BID, I’m proud to lend my creativity to raise awareness about women’s safety. The Get Home Safe campaign, which I’ve been a part of since 2022, aligns with my core values of advocating for women’s safety, educating myself and peers about how we can all contribute to a safer environment for women. This mural serves as a visual testament to the change that we can all collectively inspire. It’s also been an incredible opportunity for me to engage with the public by opening up meaningful dialogues and encouraging everyone to play a proactive role.’
