Keele University has marked the 75th anniversary of the National Health Service by lighting up the campus in tribute.
Keele University trains and develops the next generation of our town and has strong ties with the rest of the world to ensure the teaching of this next generation is world-class.
With Keele’s University having strong links with the NHS for teaching and research, leaders paid tribute to colleagues within the service on its 75th birthday.
Marking the occasion, the School of Medicine and the Forest of Lights on Keele campus were lit up blue, symbolising the strong connection between the University and the NHS and the NHS flag flown over Keele Hall.
Intrinsic links with Keele
As well as collaborating on pioneering healthcare research with partners across the health service, more than 180 Keele academics across the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences also work clinically in local hospitals alongside their teaching and nursing and medicine students, carrying out placements with local trusts throughout their degrees.
Over 5,000 Keele-trained nurses and midwives work on the NHS frontline, with many staying local after they graduate, and our clinical academics are at the forefront of putting medical research into practice through the Impact Accelerator Unit.
Keele was also instrumental in the formation of Keele Deal: Health, a commitment between the University and local healthcare partners to work collaboratively to improve healthcare across the Midlands region, and in April this year, awarded ‘University Trust’ status to Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust in a move that is helping patients, students, and colleagues in local communities.

Professor Trevor McMillan, Vice-Chancellor of Keele University, said: “Our staff are not only carrying out pioneering research alongside colleagues in the health service, but many of them continue to work on the NHS frontline and have a direct impact on patients, working as GPs, surgeons, and paramedics among many other crucial roles.
“Our students, too, have a tremendous impact on patients, both while on placements during their degrees and after graduation, with many Keele-trained nurses, doctors, and midwives working in local hospitals after finishing their degrees. We’re enormously proud of our strong links with the NHS, and we are pleased to mark this special relationship with this campus-wide tribute.”
